A pair of Spotted Eagle Owls in our Chimney

A pair of  Spotted Eagle Owls have made our chimney their home. The Spotted Eagle Owl is actually the commonest large owl in Southern Africa, occurring in a variety of habitats from woodlands to forest patches.

During the day the two of them will hide in the chimney, only peeking out now and again.  It looks like they have each chosen a “side” to guard and I had to walk around the house to get a look at the male Spotted Eagle Owl from the other side of the chimney.

Most afternoons though you can spot them as they sit on the edge of the chimney before they take off to perch in one of their favourite tees before hunting at dusk.

These owls hunt a variety of prey from beetles and large crickets to small mammals such as bats and mice.

After sunset you can hear their distinctive call as these two Spotted Eagle Owls call to each other from across the garden. We are hoping that they will nest in one of the nest boxes we have placed in some of the trees as they breed mainly from August to October.

I haven’t visited Cape Town in more that 5 years and haven’t seen my family in nearly 2 years so I was super excited at going to Cape town on holiday and staying with my family for a while. My uncle and aunt live in Stellenbosch on a small vineyard. My aunt also turned part of the family house into a guesthouse and this is where my brother and I would stay for a couple of days.

They live about 30 minutes’ drive from Cape Town International Airport and it was quite easy to find. It lies between strawberry farms and vineyards so the area was beautiful to drive through. My aunt named the vineyard Aan de Vliet and it is nestled at the foothills of the Stellenbosch Mountain.

As soon as we arrived I felt like I was far away from everything especially the rushed feeling of the city that was actually very close by. The small farm definitely offered me a refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and gave me loads of time to just be quiet and with nature.

The small family vineyard has a country farm atmosphere with beautiful panoramic views over the vineyards and mountains. Aan de Vliet was definitely the ideal base from which to explore the beauty of the Western Cape.

One of the first things I did after arriving and greeting everyone was to go for a walk through the lovely gardens and vineyard that is situated in front of the big family house. Standing in the vineyard looking out over the mountains I felt as if my holiday has actually started and that I can now start relaxing!
