Cape Town has so many picturesque spots that it is often hard to choose where to go for a stroll. One of my favourite spots for a relaxing stroll is along the promenade at Sea Point. This broad paved sea-side path copies the coastline curves with views of the sea and small beaches. Sea Point promenade is the ideal spot to watch a beautiful sunset from or just to go and enjoy some fresh air. While I lived in Cape Town City center I would spend a lot of afternoons here after work, just relaxing and taking in the social atmosphere of Cape Town.
Sea Point is actually the only sea-side suburb of Cape Town with high-rise development, so is quite a popular residential area. During the mornings and afternoons the 7km promenade is filled with residents and tourists out walking, jogging or socializing. There is always someone walking a dog or pushing a pram so getting photos without people in them can be quite a challenge sometimes.
There are beautiful broad beaches and also some rocky parts along the promenade. The beaches are not really suitable for swimming but are good for discovering rock pools and getting your feet in the sand. They are mainly covered with shells and mussel shells thrown up by the ocean. These mussels that wash up are like diamonds to the many seagulls who always hang out here. If the seagulls are not flying around harassing people they are dropping mussels from above onto the rocks in the hope they break open. It’s not that I dislike seagulls, it is just that they tend to be quite noisy and are always swooping at peoples heads.
I was quite surprised to find two little woodpeckers here on the beach. They looked quite at home too.
Sea Point beach adjoins an Olympic-sized seawater swimming pool, which had served generations of Capetonians since the early fifties. Very convenient on a windy day when the ocean is too rough to swim in. Not that I would ever make use of it as the Atlantic ocean is freezing and nothing will get me into that cold water. My favourite thing about the swimming pool is that there are a couple of food vendors situated around it. You can get very delicious ice coffee here, something that I do at the end of such a relaxing stroll!
