As a young English woman who moved to SA in the 1970s I was very confused by these signs and kept interpreting the ‘Net Blankes’ as ‘Non Whites’ instead of ‘Whites only’ so I was always in the wrong place. Fortunately in Cape Town people were much more liberal and it didn’t matter too much, though my mother and I travelling in the wrong railway coach down to Muizenberg were given some very funny and amused looks!
