Adventures that I have had and places throughout the world that I have journeyed to up to now:

  1. Right after finishing University I worked my way around the Bahamas and Caribbean on a cruise ship for a couple of months and had the opportunity to visit 11 different islands.
  2. Swam with stingrays at Sting-ray City in the Caribbean.
  3. Drove down the Mexican coast of Cozumel on a moped.
  4. Walked up the stairs of the Aztec ruins in Belize.

  5. Stood on Times Square in New York.
  6. Took the ferry in New York over to Staten Island to see the Statue of Liberty.
  7. Walked across London Bridge and watched the changing of the guards in front of Buckingham Palace.
  8. Went all the way to the top of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London and nearly got blown away by the strong wind up there.
  9. Went into Westminster Abbey the English Gothic Cathedral in London.
  10. Shopped till I dropped in London’s Camden Town and Notting Hill, Portobello Market, England.

  11. Went punting on the canals through Cambridge.
  12. Checked out where the Queen spends her winters at Sandringham house in the North-East of England.
  13. Dipped my feet into the Roman Baths in Bath, England.
  14. Stonehenge is still mystical and mysterious even though the highway now runs past it.
  15. A Cathedral that is definitely a must see is York Minster in York, England.
  16. Searched through Canterbury Cathedral to find the spot where the priest, Thomas Becket, was assassinated, England.
  17. Watched a show on the West End in London(Wicked and Blood Brothers, they were both excellent!), England
  18. Walked through the Harry Potter dining hall at Christ Church in Oxford, England.
  19. Spent New Years in Edinburgh at the famous Hogmany festival.
  20. Sat in the Scottish Highlands next to Loch Ness searching for the monster.

  21. Backpacked through Spain and Portugal.
  22. Took part in the Bull Run at Pamplona, Spain.
  23. Visited the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and fell in love with the art of Gaudi.
  24. Fell in love with Barcelona, the art, people and definitely the seafood paella.
  25. Went to Figueres, Spain to visit the museum built by Salvador Dali.
  26. The Alhambra in Grenada, Spain took my breath away!!
  27. Had way too much port in Porto.

  28. Had a snowball fight next to the Eiffel tower in Paris and stuffed myself with chocolate crepes.
  29. Walked through the Notre Dame and visited the Louver Museum in Paris.
  30. Had a break in Egypt where I saw the sun come up over the Valley of Kings and Queens in a hot air balloon.
  31. Got harassed while trying to explore the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.
  32. Cruised down the Nile from Luxor down to Aswan.
  33. Desecrated the Karnack Temple in Egypt when I got sick all over one of the altars and got escorted out.

  34. Duck and dived the traffic with my bright yellow Honda cup motorbike and enjoyed the sunshine in Saigon, Vietnam where I lived for a year.
  35. Hiked through the valleys of Sa Pa and canoed through Ha Long Bay in Vietnam.
  36. Journeyed along the Mekong Delta River from Saigon all the way to Cambodia with my mom.
  37. A romantic retreat away from the chaos of Saigon was the City of Love, Dalat in Vietnam.
  38. Got lost while exploring Angor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia while drinking cafe sau da.
  39. Got really depressed after visiting the Killing Fields of Cambodia in Phnom Penh.

  40. Made a pit stop in South Korea to taste kim chi and eat live octopus.
  41. Ubud, the heart of Bali’s artistic heritage with art everywhere was a very special outing.
  42. White river rafted through the rivers of Bali and quad biked through its beautiful rice paddies.

  43. Live in Tokyo, Japan for 6 months and arrived just as the Cherry blossoms welcomed in spring.
  44. Stalked the geisha in Kyoto, Japan while exploring all the glorious temples it has to offer.
  45.  Went to Hiroshima for a sad memorial service where I was reminded once again how cruel people can be towards each other.
  46. Ayuthaya with its magnificent Wat Arun is a must visit when in Thailand.
  47. Had a real Thai Massage and patted a tiger in Bangkok, Thailand.
  48. Got to meet the woman of the Hill Tribes of Northern Thailand in Chiang Mai.
  49. Lived in UAE exploring the desert for a while, even rode on a camel!
  50. Burned my feet on the hot Dubai sea sand with the 56-story Burj Al Arab behind me!!

  51. Had my full of baklava in Turkey while walking through the Hagia Sophia.
  52. Loved exploring the Roman Ruins of Ephesus in Turkey.
  53. Bought way too much at the Covered Market in Istanbul, Turkey.
  54. Swam in the beautiful hot springs of the geological fairyland of Pamukkale, Turkey.
  55. Took a sunrise hot air balloon ride over the sculpted and surrealistic landscape of Cappadocia, Turkey.
  56. I walked along the Via Dalarosa and explored the whole Old City in Jerusalem, Israel during Christmas.
  57. Stood in the Church of the Nativity, Bethlehem on Christmas eve.

  58. Walked across the Red Square and explored the Kremlin in Moscow!!
  59. Visited the Famous St Basils Cathedral and the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow.
  60. Learnt to ice-skate and stood on a frozen river in Russia!!!
  61. Experienced the famous White Nights of Saint Petersburg, Moscow.
  62. Watched Romeo and Juliet ballet in the Bolshoi theater in Moscow, Russia.
  63. Stood on the mosaic floor of the Cathedral of Spilled Blood in Saint Petersburg, Moscow.
  64. Visited Peterhof with its stunning fountains and walked through Pavlovsk the biggest park even in Europe, in Saint Petersburg, Moscow.

  65. The magnificent Forbidden City with its fast halls and pavilions in Beijing, China kept me busy for hours!!
  66. The Great Wall of China was definitely a highlight in all my travels and I will never forget the experience of walking along this wall!!!
  67. Had the best bubble tea in Hong Kong with my mom!!
  68. Cruised through the magnificent Gorges on the Yangtze River in China.
  69. Stood in front of the sensational Terra-Cotta Warriors of Xian in China.

  70. Stood at the top of Table Mountain looking out over Cape Town, South Africa.
  71. Crawled through the stunning Cango Caves in the heat of Oudtshoorn, South-Africa.
  72. Drove the scenic Garden Route of the Cape region, South-Africa.
  73. Saw WHITE Lions and tigers at the Cango Wildlife Ranch in South-Africa.
  74. Climbed to the top of the Santa Lucia Hill for a panoramic view if Santiago in Chile!!
  75. Stood on a mountain top in the Andes 3030 meters above sea-level.
  76. Walked through the winding streets between the colourful houses of Valparaiso in Chile!
  77. Drank Chilean boutique wine on Casablanca vineyard in Chile!
  78. Felt an earthquake in Santiago, Chile!
  79. Stood on top of San Cristobel hill next to the huge statue of the Virgin in the middle of Santiago!
  80. Drank a Terremotto, “earthquake” in La Piojera the oldest traditional pub restaurant in Santiago!
  81. Went wine tasting in Stellenbosch, South-Africa.

  3. Wonder where you grew up in South Africa. Have travelled myself quite a lot but settled myself with Yvonne in South Africa since 2000 (first Robertson and since almost 2 yrs in Stanford nr. Hermanus) Think that more south Africans should take the chance to see more of the world…

    • I grew up on the East Coast in Richards Bay near Durban. I started travelling as soon as I finished university and haven’t stopped since, but plan to settle back in South-Africa some day. I agree, there is a whole world out there to explore and so many things to learn and experience, everyone should leave their own country and travel at least once.

    • Thank you Erin! Hope you have a wonderful adventure in Africa!! I have been very privileged to be able to make traveling a big part of my life. There are so many amazing places out there to explore…South-America is next on my list!!

  5. What a lot of amazing adventures! My son is a Fulbright teaching assistant in Argentina right now, in Salta. He studied abroad there during his junior year, and couldn’t wait to get back. He has used his time off to go to Chile, which he enjoyed, and we are going to meet him in Peru this summer, after he goes through Bolivia with some friends. When we visited him last ,we went to Iguazu, which was amazing. I hope you get there on your visit!

    • Thanks, I do hope to explore a lot during my stay in Chile. I have heard a lot of good things about Argentina and will definitely be going there when I get the chance. South America has so many amazing things to offer I think I will be overwhelmed with choice of places to visit! Really excited about this move!!

    • Thanks. I have been very privileged to be able to travel so much! I love experiencing new cultures and getting to see the world! Hoping to travel a lot in South America in the next year or two. Will start my South America exploration as soon as I have settled and found my feet in Santiago, Chile!

    • Thank you so much Kavita! It has always been my dream to travel and experience the world and I couldn’t wait to start doing it. It has been a great adventure and such a blessing to be able to live my dream! I am glad that I am able to share my adventure and show people why I travel around, let them share in my experiences!

    as somebody who travels quite a bit , how much time on an average do you spend in a new country (pragmatic, assuming a day job :)) ?

    • Thank you! It depended, I taught English so lived between 6 months and 2 years in a counytry before I moved on. That way I got to experience the country and its culture totally, getting to know the people and places that make each country so exciting.

    • Thank you! I loved Bali, it is such a peaceful and beautiful place to spend some time. I have actually been there twice now and each time I found so much to do an see……it is an amazing place to visit! You definitely live in a fabulous place.

  14. Hey Janaline! Brilliant post! Is there a way I can get some more info about your trips? About funding etc etc? I am thinking of embarking on a world journey and I must check what the running costs are!
    (Sorry for being pedantic, Belize has Aztec ruins, not Inca!)
